ArtVenture

When that tragedy took place in Sandy Hook in December, I told myself that I needed to get involved with children again. Somehow. Someway. I wanted to. I have missed that youthful childlike spirit.

Then I remembered being asked by a neat gal from Girl Scouts to teach art to young girls. The Girl Scouts here do a very cool auction in the Spring called ArtVenture. They collaborate with established artists in their communities and create a piece of artwork for the auction.

This little kitty can’t wait to meet them. She will be the launching point for some great artwork.

I’ve been gathering art supplies for the girls and creating all sorts of things for them to do. Dick Blick has a great sale going so I was able to get lots of paint, brushes and canvases for our time together. I have a small group, which is perfect. I’ll let you know how it goes!

His and Hers

We did something out of the ordinary over the weekend. Something I never in a million years would have seen coming. My hubby and I went to Canvas and Cabernet for a date night! A post anniversary date night. Our anniversary was about a month ago, and we are always so tired from all of the Christmas festivities, we never seem to do much to celebrate it. Sigh. Hubby surprised me this year though!

In case you aren’t familiar with these types of places, you basically paint what the instructor presents and are free to sip on wine from their bar while you paint. Something about the wine — taking away all your inhibitions maybe?! It certainly makes for a fun night, that’s for sure. Several of these types of venues have popped up in other cities, so I was delighted to see that one opened here in our town.

I’ve know this man a LONG time. A really long time. I have never seen his artsy side. Probably because it was undiscovered! Never existed! But on this night, he gave his all.

We had such a nice evening! Here are our almost finished canvases. Horrible light on all of these pix. Sorry.

Here is a final shot of our canvases.

It was totally out of both of our comfort zones, and so much fun. I wouldn’t normally paint something like these posies, and he wouldn’t normally paint anything at all. So it was a win win! The wine wasn’t bad either.

New Series of Abstracts

This series of abstracts is a big expression of my thoughts and moods on any given day. I sit down in front of a blank canvas and gather my thoughts slowly. The colors dance in my mind, the paint goes down, the form flows, and before I know it I am lost in the motion and detail. If you are a painter, you know how it feels…it’s wonderful.

This next one I think I’ve shown before. I love how it came together.

Here is the newest one:

(Day by Day, 12x16x1)

When I was taking photos of these canvases earlier today, I was so delighted to see how these two look side by side. They would be together, don’t you think? I didn’t plan it, but I love how they flow, and mix and mingle together.

You can see them all and more photos in my Etsy shop: here!

These are fantastic! I made some quick abstract sketches just out of the blue a few days ago that I’ve been dying to paint. Never done abstract art before but I am so excited to get going. I just have to clear out a space in my studio to begin. :)

Thanks Lana! Yes, set up a little area in your studio and paint something wonderful!

A Quick Trip South

Things were rough last week, not gonna lie. My Step Dad was in the hospital quite a while with health issues. So my hubby and I decided a trip to see him and my family were needed. It was so great to see everyone!  Mediocre photos here, just squint a little, maybe that’ll help.

We haven’t seen my Sister, Sassy, since May! I hadn’t seen her hubby in a couple years, so it was great seeing him, too.

Did I ever show you their cute doggies? This guy, Luke, is an Akita. That’s short for part bear. Compare his head size to my sisters…

Yikes! Huge doggy yes, but he is just a teddy bear. Really. There other poochy is Bo. Little Bo. His fur sorta matches their rug in their living room!

We were fully prepared to spend the weekend in the hospital with my Step-Dad, Dale. We’d been at the hospital less than an hour when we got fantastic news!

He got to go home!

We were all so happy and so very grateful, we couldn’t believe our ears.  I know his Lymphoma and Leukemia are taking over his life at this point, and it’s all been very difficult, so when we heard that news it was such a sigh of relief. For now at least.

My Mom promised him that if/when he got out of the hospital, he could get a recliner. So about 3 minutes after the happy news, a swift plan of action was made. He wanted a recliner for two, so he could still hold Mom’s hand. How sweet is that? Pretty much the cutest thing ever.  Within 1 hour (my Mom is the ultimate power shopper, I kid you not) there was a recliner in the driveway.

The guys (my Jim and Sassy’s Jim) moved it in and he was set up in style. So glad to have him home.

It was a quick trip, but it was awesome. So great to get hugs and to give them. We all needed it.

Really happy for you guys to have some news that lifted your spirits. :) Your step dad wanting to hold your mom’s hand really touched me. What a tenderhearted man. Love that. Praying for you guys still.

Glad you got to make the trip! Adding your dad to my prayer list. If you’d like, you can send me his name.

A Change of Pace

Creating is a part of me. Such a big part. I try and paint everyday and I have been dedicating time to paintings everyday for months now.  I really think it makes me a better person. Lately, I’ve been really moved to paint more freely…abstractly or whatever you want to call it. Maybe it’s a way to release emotions or to express secrets or feelings that overwhelm me. I wonder if that even makes sense? It does to me so I’m going with that.

Here are some of the pieces that have come together nicely. This piece was done on paper.

(You Are The Highlight of My Day)

There is a beautiful gold shimmer on the above piece and the below piece. Oh man…it’s so pretty in person. Hard to photograph and do that pretty gold justice, so you will just have to trust me on that. This piece has gold across the bottom.

(Structure Among Chaos)

Here is another new piece. This one is a canvas.

 (Better in the Morning, 12×16)

It’s also got some gold here and there. Gold is such a lovely highlight. I tried to get a photo of the light catching that gold. It looks like little bright white splotches in the photo but they are really gold!

So is this the new direction for me? Who knows….I’ve always enjoyed the freedom of painting like this. I have done several pieces like this a while back…loved it then, too. But this time it’s more therapeutic for me. Yes, very different from what I’ve done the last few months. I love my long neck characters and I know I will do more. This expressive abstract style is working for me at the moment. I plan to get these pieces on Etsy soon.

My Step-Dad has had a very tough couple of months. Very tough. Long time readers and friends know he has struggled with Leukemia and Lymphoma for the past 11 years. We just keep praying and loving that sweet man and he continues to amaze us. It’s been such a battle lately though. For him and my Mom. We will keep praying! And painting!

Love your use of colors. So pretty!

I’ve often thought about your step dad and wondered how he’s doing. Thanks for updating us. I will continue to pray for him and your family when I visit here. So sorry he’s struggling, and so sorry you guys have so much to deal with right now.
