Artsarben Art Fair

Last week I found out I was accepted into the juried art show in a great part of our city, Aksarben Village. Aksarben = Nebraska spelled backwards. To say I was nervous submitting my mixed media pieces would be an understatement. I’ve never done that before…so I didn’t know what to expect. For some reason, it felt right though.

(art journal page where ink and writing paced back and forth across the page for ten days waiting…)

My husband thought I was crazy to take this on. He would be right. But as we all know, stretching and reaching and biting off more than you can chew…well that’d be my motto at several points of growth in my life. So I went for it.

I submitted my images and a booth photo. That was tricky because I’d never taken a photo of a whole booth with a canvases. Miraculously, it all came together. We borrowed a tent from a friend and set it up, scrambled to fill it with tables and lots of cloths. Lots of ironing, blech.

Of course we did all of this set up on a day that was a sweltering 95 degrees in the shade. Of course! And of course we decided to smoke a turkey in the backyard the same day. So I had to take photos of the booth in between humongous waves of smoker smoke. Haha. Hey, I love a challenge!

Here is the end result.

I didn’t hang anything, because it wasn’t going to invest another penny. I worried about that for ten days. But you have to have a cut off point, right? Right?I hung solar lights from the bars on the top. They are so cool to me. They are the ones that are now on our deck. I love them! There is also pom pom fringe hanging, and some strung postcards.

My sister recommended two wooden ladders for displays. We had one (it was my Dad’s…awww) but I needed another. If, big if, I would have found one to buy it would have put me way over budget and it’d be all “new” looking. Not the look I was going for. But miraculously, I found one on on Craigslist for $10 and hubby picked it up that morning.  Nice!

Now for the next challenge…how to actually hang canvases. I have some time though. The show is in September. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

If you are in the area, you should make plans to check out this art fair! It’s going to be great! Know what else, it’s just a few blocks from where our son’s dorms are. Wonder if he will come see me?

Hey! Love the canvases. One trick I’ve used before is to get matchstick blinds and hang them from the support bars of the tent. Then use drapery hooks to attach the canvases to the blinds. The blinds are sturdy yet lightweight and super cheap. Good luck!

Congratulations! I’m so proud of you. Wish the show was in October. Remembering some Aksarben trivia. When I was in elementary school, my parents would buy these ticket books for summer live performances. We saw some great shows over the years!
