What I Did and Why

This past month has been a crazy one. We have been doing some may-jor house cleaning around here. We had a garage sale a couple weeks ago. We had one about ten years ago, and I forgot how…uhm…fun they are. Fun?! Well the jury is still out on that. Garage people can be pretty strange and they most certainly come in all shapes and sizes and from all walks of life. Glad my hubby was with me! We sold a lot of stuff. That’s for sure.  Mostly mine. Lots of scrapbook stuff, vintage stuff and lots and lots of stamps. It was crazy.

Even after the 2 day sale I had two large boxes left over. I was tempted to save them, but I didn’t. Nope Nope. Donated them. I don’t need them, nobody needs this many stamps. I probably sold 1/3 of what I had and all of them were in boxes for about 4 years…I never missed them once. Never even went through the boxes looking for “that one stamp”.

We sold nearly every last scrap of paper and scrapbook stuff I had, too. I had a LOT…again, boxes of it. Drawers upon drawers. Stuff that was never used. It was ridiculous and I really wanted to reclaim that space back and thin out. You cant call me a paper hoarder…nope nope…not anymore.

Back to the sale, as soon as we made enough $ to get this big red bad boy, my hubby called and ordered it. So ugly….yes…oh heck yes. But it was part of the process.

We did donate a lot lot lot of stuff, which felt great, too. What we didn’t sell or donate went into the big red box. By the time the week was over, that dumpster was nearly full. It’s almost embarrassing to think about it…and I wanted that thing out of our driveway so badly. But we were on a mission, and we did it.

They came and picked it up yesterday…woo hoo!! I wasn’t sorry to see it go…I cheered the driver and blew him a kiss of thanks as he drove it out of the driveway. Farewell!!

And now, I gotta say it feels great. So great. Closets are clean, storage rooms, and nooks and crannies are cleared out. There are a few areas to finish up still, but most of the hard work is done. It’s amazing what a family of 5 can accumulate over 15 years. Most of it was my studio stuff….and it’s gone and I feel sooo free and light and happy!

I hope I didn’t make you think I have nothing left in my studio now…I still have plenty. But what I have is what I want, and will use. I eliminated the stuff I won’t use and haven’t touched in years! I recommend this cleaning and clearing out process to everyone. Use it or get rid of it. Seriously.

Good for you! We did the same thing in our home. It feels so good to reduce the clutter!

Teresa, your post is so inspiring! I have been feeling stuck amongst all the stuff we’ve accumulated in our house and my studio. What a great idea to get that dumpster! We’re having a neighborhood garage sale in June and I think I’m going to order up one of those big red bad boys too. It’s must have felt so good to see all that stuff be hauled away.

Oh yes! I know that feeling…. had a great big box in my driveway a few years ago and it was filled in no time! I bet I could fill another one now.
I am trying to do the same thing…. ugh…. such work, but such a great feeling…
Good for you!
Can’t wait to see what wonderful things you create in that newly organized space!

That is too funny! I have been hanging on to every bit of ribbon, paper, scrap, etc. thinking that it will be eventually vintage.
